The Capitol Hill Block Party is one of Seattle’s most popular and iconic annual outdoor music events. And it’s a great boon to all the restaurants and bars lucky enough to be located inside the gates. However, historically, many of the surrounding businesses have seen a decrease in patronage and revenue during that weekend – Capitol Cider included. This began to change for us three years ago when we turned to band leader of Holy Pistola and man about town Moe Betta for help.

“When the owner of Capitol Cider, Julie Tall, approached me for ideas, I was inspired by the model of SXSW (South by Southwest), which started in 1987 as a music festival and then grew to become an Austin-wide multi-media, multi-organization, multi-day event,” Moe Betta states.  “In the spirit of ‘if you can’t beat ’em, join ’em,’ I thought we could piggy back on CHBP and I proposed an event called the “Under The Block” party, since the music venue at Capitol Cider is downstairs in The Ballast Bar.” (Which is also air-conditioned!)

“Our event would showcase local acts not playing the CHBP, but that are still of high quality, worthy of being featured, and could draw a crowd,” Moe Betta continues. “The launch of our first Under The Block Party three years ago was a huge success and featured a curated open mic and local singer Tasha Wahlenberg, and performances by Holy Pistola and the band Down North. I’ve been curating the talent for it ever since.”

During the first two years, admission to our Under the Block Party was free, but given the popularity of the event and the expense of putting it on, this year, we’re charging a $5 cover.  And, for the first time, we are offering twenty $25 tickets, which guarantee a great seat and a specialty cocktail or draught of your choice. Tickets can be pre-purchased on Eventbrite; they will also be available at the door (space permitting).

Our 2017 Under the Block Party lineup features some of Seattle’s most eclectic Soul acts and is as follows:

9-10pm: Falon Sierra

After her recent KEXP feature and finalist for 2017 “Sound Off”, the sky’s the limit for Seattle’s own Falon Sierra who combines her soulful voice with electronic beats for a cosmic R&B/funk vibe. Her latest EP,  Beauty in Danger.  was released in the summer of 2016.

10:30pm- midnight: Tiffany Wilson

Tiffany Wilson, widely recognized as one of the best soul singers around, is a true musical artist and songwriter whose voice speaks to something real and soulful.  Not content with writing only standard love songs, her latest album “SeeSharp” also speaks of inner and outer change, politics, and vision of a brighter future.

Opener: Otieno Terry & Friends

Winner of the 2014 Sound Off! Award (MoPoP’s Battle of the Bands for the 21 and younger set), Terry is a silky-voiced singer with magnetic swagger. His musical vision and sound is unlike any other and is not to be missed.

Closer: Holy Pistola

Holy Pistola is a well-rehearsed 8-piece band that seamlessly blends elements of Soul, Funk, and Hip Hop whose live set has become a must see. Their musical direction reflects a wide array of inspirations across those same genres. They are inspired by everything from Sly & The Family Stone to golden era hip hop artists such as The Fugees.

So, join us for live music, food, drink and fun this Block Party weekend!
