20111020-wandering-aengus-9192-1Each month we feature our Cidermaker of the month on the blog. For November we’re featuring Anthem Cider with cidermaker, James Kohn, who is also co-owner of Wandering Aengus Ciderworks in Salem, Oregon. See below for Kohn’s inside scoop on how Anthem Cider was born and what he think the ingredients to success are.

When did you discover cider?

I discovered it in 2001 when I lived down the road from Farnum Hill Cider in Lebanon, NH. I had never had cider like that before, and I feel in love with Cider.

How was Anthem born?

We had been making Wandering Aengus Cider from heirloom cider apples for years. We had a belief that only heirloom cider apples could make a proper cider. When we discovered that dessert/culinary apples makes great cider too, just more sessionable, AND an opportunity opened for us at our distributors in 2010, Anthem was born,.

What are the ingredients to success?

Stay consistently true to your beliefs and get really good at only a few things.

When you’re not making brewing up something tasty, what are you doing?

Enjoying life with my three children and friends.

What are a couple of your must-try ciders and why?

EZ Orchards Dry Cider because it is an Estate Cider using French cider making techniques.

What sets Anthem apart from other cideries?

We are very particular about and know the apples varieties we use. We only use fresh ingredients. We have a direct link to our apples and pressing.
